Bruce and the Law

The eulogy Bruce Springsteen gave for Clarence Clemons is linked above. I can't read it without weeping. One section has resonated with me:

"I think perhaps "C" protected me from a world where it wasn't always so easy to be an insecure, weird and skinny white boy either. But, standing together we were badass, on any given night, on our turf, some of the baddest asses on the planet. We were united, we were strong, we were righteous, we were unmovable, we were funny, we were corny as hell and as serious as death itself."

That's the story of being a criminal defense attorney. It's not easy walking into a court room and the entire force of the State stands against your client. It's not easy standing alone. But together, we are powerful. Standing together, we fight the good fight. United. Strong. Righteous. Unmovable. Dark Goofy Humor. And as serious as death ... because we fight for life.

I sometimes worry that I "stretch" the meaning of Bruce's songs in my life ... but I have not done that here.

Tonight, when I fall to my knees, I'm going to thank God for Clarence. And Bruce. And the wondrous job I have with my criminal defense brothers and sisters.
